Description
View of the entrance to the 200 American Water Colors Exhibition, held at The Baltimore Museum of Art in June 1942. The exhibition included works which were chosen as the winners of a government-sponsored competition; the competition asked artists to submit cheerful watercolors to brighten the walls of the Marine Hospital in Carville, Louisiana. From approximately 10,000 total artists, the Fine Arts Section of the Federal Works Agency chose the winning 200 for their reflections of realism, fresh style, and light-hearted content. Works by one of the winners, Marguerite Burgess, were also displayed in a solo show in the BMA's lower galleries. To accompany the government's selection of artwork, the BMA organized an accompanying exhibition of watercolors from the Saidie A. May and Blanche Adler Collections in June to September of the same year.
