Description
View of entrance to the Scenery for Cinema exhibition held at the Baltimore Museum of Art from January-March of 1942. The exhibition hoped to address the gap between the contemporaneous popularity of cinema and film stars and the lack of literature and appreciation of the "static visual side of the film-its setting and costumes" which the exhibition pamphlet describes as "of almost unbelievable realistic perfection." To better demonstrate this value of film scenery to the museum audience, the Baltimore Museum of Art director, Leslie Cheek, Jr., secured the services of John Koenig in producing and designing the exhibition, along with the help of the Museum of Modern Art Film Library and several contacts in Hollywood. As described in Leslie Cheek Jr.'s foreword to the exhibition pamphlet, the concept for the installation was also meant to be timely, as the the ongoing war would "undoubtedly force many changes in cinema technique."
