Description
View from the bottom of the steps of the exterior museum entrance with decorations for Georgian England exhibition held at the Baltimore Museum of Art in October 1941. As contemporaneous America and England sought to preserve their cultures amidst the ongoing war, the exhibition was meant to be timely in celebrating the shared values of eighteenth century Georgian England and young America- a rich artistic period of colonial expansion. The installations included groupings of paintings. interior design, furnishings, architecture, sculpture, literature, costumes, and gardens, hoping to demonstrate the unity of visual arts during the Georgian period. Eighteenth century furniture groupings of English and American pieces were displayed side by side to illustrate the similarities, including works by Chippendale, Hepplewhite, and Sheraton. Also part of this unity were the musical arts, addressed in an eighteenth century harpsichord concert performed by Ralph Kirkpatrick on the exhibition's opening night.
