Description
View of two place settings of china in "Maze of good and bad design" section of the Art Begins at Home exhibition held at the Baltimore Museum of Art in February of 1940. The exhibition was designed to promote the idea that art should be accessible rather than restrictive, and as such should begin at home instead of merely being confined to museums and the homes of collectors. To aid the patrons in their choosing their pieces and appropriate design, the exhibition was constructed as a maze in which visitors would be confronted with two art objects for the home and should choose the "better" to move along in the right direction. If they chose the incorrect piece, they would be led to a dead end with a list of reasons why that choice was the inferior one. To further the concept of accessibility of art in the home, the maze would end at an information desk where they could find locations around the city to actually purchase the superior artworks and objects. In addition to the maze, there were also two galleries filled with more unique furnishings which although beyond most average budgets would also hopefully provide further inspiration and knowledge.
