Description
View of a costumed guard in the Academicism gallery with artist Rosetti's painting "Joan of Arc" from the 1940 Baltimore Museum of Art exhibition "Modern Painting Isms and How They Grew." The exhibition was designed to promote conversation and criticism on the emerging modern styles of artwork such as Post Impressionism, Expressionism, Primitivism, Cubism, and Surrealism, in comparison to the conservative traditional artworks of Academicism, Romanticism, Realism, and Impressionism. Aside from the two separate displays, the exhibition also included a "Bury-the-Hatchet Gallery" which featured a library on both the older and newer art and acted as a space for protagonists of academicism and modernism to argue or discuss their differences of opinion. The exhibition was the first under the leadership of the new Assistant to the Director of the museum, John Koenig, who had previously worked on the Medici exhibition, also at the Baltimore Museum of Art. The guard in the Academicism gallery was costumed and placed so as to evoke the traditional style in which that artwork would have been displayed, along with comfortable upholstered cushions and a magnifying glass for patrons to examine the pieces. In addition to Rosetti's painting, the artwork in the Academicism gallery included Carolus-Duran's "Italian Model" and "Woman's Head in Profile" as well as paintings by Bougeureau, Millet, Neuville, Daubigny, and Leutze.
