Description
View of a gallery with publications and other works in the Bruce Rogers exhibition held at the Baltimore Museum of Art in June and July of 1939. The circulating exhibition was furnished by the American Institute of Graphic Arts in cooperation with the Grolier Club in New York. Though Rogers (better known as B. R.) was known for his watercolors, illustrations, and sculptures, but his book design printing - the trade of which he was considered a master - made up the content of this exhibition. There were several hundred books, layouts, and sketches, displayed chronologically, beginning with work before 1897 and ending with plans for books not yet released. The displays were accompanied by explanations so that book-loving museum visitors without technical knowledge of printing could still appreciate the mastery of Rogers' works. Despite the success of his works and this solo exhibition, Rogers often criticized his own work and disliked being referred to as a "typographer."
