Epstein, Jacob, 1864-1945; Baltimore Museum of Art; House plants;
Description
View of the Epstein Gallery of The Baltimore Museum of Art. Antoine-Louis Barye's Panther Seizing Stag is visible at the left. Other works are obscured by a large rubber plant. In the background, another gallery can be seen with silver from the Museum's collection on exhibit. The Jacob Epstein Collection, including Van Dyck's magnificent Rinaldo and Armida and Rodin's The Thinker, was given to the Museum in 1946. Epstein was a wealthy Baltimore businessman and sat on the first board of trustees of the BMA. After selling his company, American Wholesale Corporation, he focused his attentions on philanthropy and collecting art. He caused a great sensation in the art world when he purchased Rinaldo and Armida for $140,000 in 1927.
